Places With Strange Names in South Africa


The quintessential South African small town – like a picture-perfect postcard from yesteryear, Darling has the rural charm which has led to many theories on how it got its name.

It could be the darling of the Western Cape or even the darling of famous performer, Pieter-Dirk Uys, and his alter-ego, Tannie Evita, whose museum and theatre is a main attraction in the town.

But no the town is actually named after Sir Charles Henry Darling, a British lieutenant-governor, who founded a farm in the area circa 1853.
